Makenna’s Meditation wouldn’t be the blog it is today without the inspiration of other Black creatives. During Women’s History Month, I’m honoring the women of the present and future who inspired me and hopefully will inspire you all.

As a 23-year-old woman walking with Christ, I definitely face challenges trying to stay focused. At times, the world can be very loud, and society has a way of making life disconnected from God seem better or like it would be more fun. I would be lying if I said there aren’t times when even I question this walk and the stance I’ve decided to take between living for the world or the kingdom.
As my flesh and my spirit both vie for my attention, who do I choose to give it to? How do I choose, and more often than not, how does the spirit end up on top? For me personally, finding ways to quiet down the noise of the world is super important.
Meditate in the Word of God
One of the ways I do this is by meditating on the word. In Proverbs 4, we are reminded of the importance of keeping the word of God in our hearts. When I spend time meditating, I like to think that’s exactly what I’m doing. Taking time to sit with scripture is a great way to connect with God and reframe our minds around what God says as opposed to the world.
Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live.
Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.
Proverbs 4:4-6 NIV
Feed the Spirit
Another way I stay connected to God is by finding ways to feed my spirit throughout the day.
Life moves so quickly, and we may not always have the time to read our Bibles or pray for hours. However, there are small ways we can integrate God more into our daily lives, like trading secular music for Christian music sometimes or setting aside five minutes in the middle of the day to reconnect with God.
At first, making these decisions felt like something I was forcing myself to do, but the more I really began to understand the value of doing so. What we do and intake on a day-to-day basis really shapes our perspective and can affect our walk, so be intentional.
Ask for Help from God
The last thing I would say when it comes to staying connected to God is to ask for His help. There is nothing that God can’t help us with, and that includes staying in connection with Him. I always find myself asking for help to stay disciplined and focused because I know I cannot do it all on my own. Pray to Him, be open and vulnerable with Him. God never hesitates to meet us wherever we’re at.
